Conversation Piece is a collaborative research practice based in Stockholm, Sweden. It was initiated in 2011 by Nicolas Cheng (HK/SE) and Beatrice Brovia (IT/SE) with a strong focus on material culture and craft discourse. Together Cheng and Brovia develop projects across a variety of scales and mediums, blurring the lines between disciplines, and with work ranging from installations to concept-driven jewellery and objects, material research and self-organized exhibitions. 

China is likely the largest producer of consumer electronics and electrical components nowadays. It is also one of the countries tasked with disposing of the large amounts of e-waste produced globally every year, most often under exploitative, hazardous conditions towards humans and environment.  

This bracelet emulates in shape, appearance and proportions the traditional jade ornaments worn around the wrist by Chinese women to ward off evil. The color of jade and this type of e-waste is strikingly similar; but while one is mined from the depth of the earth for its beauty and mystical value, the other is discarded and dumped in landfills.
