Roman bronze figure of Priapus – Fertility deity
This ancient bronze figure represents Priapus, the Greco-Roman god associated with fertility, abundance, and the protection of gardens and rural spaces. The deity is traditionally depicted in ithyphallic form, a symbolic feature that expressed prosperity, agricultural fertility, and apotropaic power rather than erotic intent.
In the Roman world, small sculptures of Priapus were commonly placed in gardens, domestic entrances, and agricultural settings, where they functioned as protective guardians believed to ensure good harvests and ward off evil influences. Originating from Asia Minor and later widely adopted across Greece and Rome, Priapus became a popular rustic deity embodying both fertility and good fortune.
