Green Chartreuse is an iconic liqueur produced by the Carthusian monks of Voiron, near Grenoble, following a historical tradition that runs through the centuries. (Chartreuse.fr, 2021)
It is marketed under the name Green Chartreuse and has an alcohol content of 55% by volume, making it one of the strongest liqueurs on the market. (Chartreuse.fr, 2021)

The exact recipe remains secret, but it is known to result from an assemblage of nearly 130 plants and spices. (Chartreuse.fr, 2021; Wikipedia, Green Chartreuse)
The green character comes from the prolonged maceration of the plants and aging in oak casks, rather than from an artificial colorant.
Production takes place in Voiron, in Isère, where the monks oversee every step, from distillation to maturation.
The process begins with the extraction of the plant materials into a neutral alcohol, followed by blending and aging that can last several years.
Aromatically, Green Chartreuse unfolds notes of herbs, mint, eucalyptus, thyme, sage and citrus, enhanced by a hint of anise. (Difford’s Guide; Master of Malt)

In tasting, one perceives a warm and oily attack, a moderately sweet sweetness, and a residual bitterness that lingers. (Master of Malt; Difford’s Guide)

It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or used as an aromatic ingredient in classic or contemporary cocktails.
Historically associated with medicinal uses in the monastic tradition, it is today mainly valued as a premium spirit.

Aging in oak casks imparts roundness and woody notes that balance the intensity of the plants and soften the alcohol.
Regarding the year 2021, there is no official vintage for Green Chartreuse; the liqueur is produced continuously.

The exact proportions and precise techniques remain a secret of the Carthusian monks, and lot-to-lot variations remain minimal to ensure consistency.
Tasting notes highlight resinous and balsamic nuances, with aromatic persistence lasting several minutes.

In sum, Green Chartreuse at 55% ABV embodies a monastic heritage and a modernized oenological know-how, symbolizing a French art of living.
