Karl Lagasse, a renowned artist, has gained recognition in 2009 with his sculptures One Dollar, ranking among the top ten artists under 30 according to Artprice that same year. In 2012, the New York publication Farameh named him one of the fifty best contemporary artists, inspired by traditional American icons, in its work FOR WHICH IT STANDS: Americana in Contemporary Art. More recently, in 2016, at the Art Paris Art Fair, the President of the French Republic warmly congratulated Karl on his impressive two-meter bronze sculpture One Dollar, exhibited at the Grand Palais. Karl’s artistic journey began at age 7 with collages, prompted by his encounter with sculptor César Baldaccini. He later turned to tagging and graffiti in the Paris metro while remaining passionate about collages. The artist Yvaral Vasarely encouraged him to fuse his tags with his collages. In 2003, Karl prepared his first exhibition in Paris, leading to his first solo show in 2006 at the Isy Brachot gallery in Brussels. In 2008, he returned to Paris with an exhibition combining paintings, sculptures, and video elements at the Espace Pierre Cardin. Karl particularly enjoys unveiling his works at international exhibitions. In 2011, he was represented by Bel Air Fine Art Gallery at the Art Monaco fair with his Cryptogram One creation. In 2017, he was selected to design the trophies for the 43rd American Film Festival. Drawing inspiration from “Cryptogramme One,” he created a melted aluminum trophy with a polished mirror finish, bearing messages such as “Hope,” “7e Art,” and “Deauville” on its four faces. For the 46th edition of the Festival in 2020, Karl Lagasse received a commission to design a new trophy, inspired by a Deauville emblem: the drawing of the barriers that separate the cabines on the Planches. In 2016, France Culture mentioned Karl in an article about his monumental installation, A Piece of Heaven on Earth, which combines a Maserati wrapped in white plastic and a Jesus statue surrounded by dollar-shaped sculptures, symbolizing human debt. This work was unveiled at the Art Paris Art Fair 2015 in collaboration with Maserati. In 2017, he created the Deauville American Film Festival Trophy, inspired by his Cryptogram One and adding phrases such as “Hope” and “7e Art” on the trophies.
