Trilobiet - Gefossiliseerd dier - Walliserops hammi - 12 cm - 11 cm
Exceptional specimen of Walliserops hammi, one of the most iconic and highly desirable trilobites from the Devonian deposits of Morocco, renowned for its remarkable trident-shaped rostrum projecting from the front of the cephalon.
This example is preserved in a striking three-dimensional “climbing” position, which enhances its dynamic appearance and overall display appeal. The long trifurcated rostrum is complete and sharply defined. While the precise function of this unusual structure remains a subject of scientific discussion, it is widely suggested that it may have served a sensory role, been used to disturb sediment while foraging, or possibly functioned in behavioral display.
The specimen shows excellent exoskeletal detail, with clearly defined eye facets and fine surface ornamentation. Several delicate thoracic spines have been meticulously prepared in full relief and carefully freed from the surrounding matrix. The preparation was carried out using air-abrasive techniques and required many hours of highly skilled, patient work, greatly enhancing both the aesthetic quality and collectible value of the fossil. No significant restoration is present.
Trilobites represent some of the earliest complex arthropods in the fossil record, first appearing over 500 million years ago and flourishing for hundreds of millions of years in ancient marine environments. Well-prepared three-dimensional examples of Walliserops trifurcatus such as this are especially prized by collectors around the world.
A rare and visually impressive fossil, perfectly suited for an advanced collection or as a standout display piece.
