Amazing piece of medieval English history: a genuine hammered silver "Long Cross" penny struck during the reign of King Henry III. This specific coin dates between 1247 and 1272 (Class 5a3).
The obverse features the classic crowned, facing bust of the King. The reverse displays the famous "Long Cross" extending to the edges, a design deliberately introduced to prevent people from illegally clipping silver from the edges of the coin! The reverse legend reads "NICOLE ON LVND," identifying the moneyer as Nicole at the London mint.
This nearly 800-year-old hammered silver coin has survived in wonderful condition! It boasts a strong, well-centered strike with pleasing details on the King's face and the central cross, complemented by a lovely, natural antique patina.
