A powerful and intimate pencil drawing by Alice Jorge (Lisbon, 1924 – 2008), one of the most significant figures in 20th-century Portuguese art and a pioneer of the printmaking renewal movement in Portugal. This work depicts a reclining female nude rendered in confident, fluid lines — a subject that stands at the very core of Alice Jorge's artistic identity. The figure reclines diagonally across the paper, described with minimal but decisive strokes that convey both anatomy and movement with remarkable economy of means. The inscription "Paris 65" places this drawing at a pivotal moment: Alice Jorge had received a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation fellowship and was working in Paris, where she was exposed to the most advanced currents of European art. These years in Paris — the early 1960s — produced what critics and contemporaries regard as some of her finest figurative work. Director and playwright Jorge Silva Melo famously remarked of her female nudes from this period that seeing them was "like reading Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex." Alice Jorge was a founding member of Gravura — Sociedade Cooperativa de Gravadores Portugueses (1956), the cooperative that transformed Portuguese printmaking. She was banned from teaching for 19 years by the Salazar regime for supporting political prisoners' families — a mark of the moral courage that characterised her entire life and work. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea, the Centro de Arte Moderna — Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, the Biblioteca Nationale de Paris, and the Museu de Luanda, among others. The work is signed in pencil in the lower right, with the location and year inscribed: Paris 65. It is presented in a black lacquered wooden frame with silver inner moulding, off-white passe-partout, and glass. The frame shows minor wear consistent with age (small chips on corners and one lateral scratch), but the drawing itself is in good condition. Provenance: Artbid Leilões, Portugal (auction reference 202.7.6.015). A rare opportunity to acquire an original drawing by a canonical figure of Portuguese modernism, at the height of her powers and in the city that defined her artistic maturity.
