Second Dutch edition.
Complete in six volumes.

Dutch translation of William Robertson's celebrated history of the reign of Emperor Charles V, one of the major historical works of the Scottish Enlightenment.

Illustrated with the engraved portrait of Emperor Charles V in the first volume.

Collation:

Vol. I: [12] + 294 pp.
Vol. II: 339 pp.
Vol. III: 335 pp.
Vol. IV: 406 pp.
Vol. V: 386 pp.
Vol. VI: 380 pp.

Complete according to pagination, including the engraved portrait.

Bound in six uniform period bindings with leather spines and corners, gilt decorative lines, gilt-lettered spine labels and numbered compartments.

The bindings show considerable age-related wear, rubbing and losses, particularly at the spine ends; the upper part of the spine of volume VI is damaged with loss. Corners and edges are worn. Please study the photographs carefully.

Internally a very attractive set. The text blocks are generally clean and well preserved, printed on good-quality laid paper. The portrait of Charles V is present and has a strong impression. Some occasional spotting, browning and other normal traces of age and use may occur.

Despite the wear to the bindings, an appealing and complete six-volume 18th-century set, preserved in its uniform historical bindings.

William Robertson (1721–1793), Scottish historian and Principal of the University of Edinburgh, was one of the leading historians of the Scottish Enlightenment. His history of Charles V was first published in English in 1769 and became an important and widely translated European historical work.

Rotterdam, 1778 – complete in 6 volumes – with engraved portrait of Emperor Charles V.
