 Cet ouvrage est la première traduction française, par l'abbé Joachim Le Grand, du manuscrit de João Ribeiro, un soldat portugais ayant passé dix-huit ans à Ceylan (actuel Sri Lanka). Il s'agit d'un témoignage de premier ordre sur la présence coloniale portugaise, la géographie de l'île et ses ressources (notamment la cannelle et les perles). Le Grand a considérablement enrichi le texte original de notes et de chapitres additionnels, faisant de cette édition une source historique majeure pour l'étude de l'océan Indien au XVIIe siècle.
