Les instruments les plus essentiels d'un babalawo yoruba, ou devin, sont son plateau (« opon Ifa ») et son tapper (« iroke Ifa »). Pour initier une séance de divination, le babalawo saupoudre de la poudre de bois sur la surface intérieure lisse du plateau et frappe plusieurs fois la pointe du saigneur contre celui-ci pour invoquer Orunmila, le dieu yoruba du destin. Au fur et à mesure que les noix de palme sacrées sont coulées, le devin enregistre les résultats en marquant la poudre avec son saigneur. Ces marquages révèlent les chants appropriés à réciter. Plus les outils du devin sont visuellement attrayants, plus ils plaisent à Orunmila, et donc plus efficaces pour répondre aux appels du devin et du client.

Le visage sculpté sur le bord de ce plateau représente Esu, le messager qui apporte des sacrifices aux dieux et supervise le rituel divinatoire. D'autres motifs incluent des oiseaux et un mudfish enroulé. Ce dernier, qui peut survivre sur terre ou dans l'eau, symbolise la capacité du devin à relier les domaines humain et spirituel.

Ce magnifique plateau très ancien présente une fantastique patine lisse et brillante sur le dessus et une patine croûteuse sur le dessous.
Réparation indigène ancienne.
