STORIA
Land Rover 80” Minerva 
Gemella quasi identica alla mitica Land Rover 80” Series 1 ecco, in una versione dell’esercito belga, la prima Land costruita su licenza al di fuori dei confini inglesi.

Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, nel 1948, la Rover & Co. Ltd (così si chiamava) presenta al Salone dell’Auto di Amsterdam, in Olanda, la sua Land Rover, la mitica “80 pollici”, capostipite di una lunga e vigorosa stirpe di 4×4 inarrestabili.

Ma che c’entra, ci si chiederà, la Minerva con la Land della Rover (della quale sembra una fotocopia)? 
Presto detto. La Land 80 “Serie 1” sin dal suo apparire ebbe un successo incredibile e diventò la 4×4 più richiesta dalle forze di polizia, dagli eserciti e da molti utilizzatori professionali non solo europei tanto che la casa madre non ce la fece a soddisfare tutte le richieste. Così nacque l'esigenza di concedere la produzione su licenza al di fuori dei confini inglesi.

Tale prospettiva solletica diversi fabbricanti europei con in primo piano la Societé Nouvelle Minerva S. A., erede della Anonyme Minerva Motors, casa automobilistica belga, con sede ad Anversa, fondata nel 1904 da Sylvain de Jong e specializzata nella produzione di auto di lusso. Una produzione tanto prestigiosa al punto da arrivare, negli “anni venti”, a realizzare persino una lussuosa “six cylinder” capace di competere in prestazioni, lusso e affidabilità con l’inglese Rolls Royce facendole addirittura concorrenza sul suolo inglese. Ed è forse anche per questa provata capacità “qualitativa” che la Rover sceglie Minerva come partner per il primo esperimento di produzione di una Land fuori dai confini nazionali.

L’accordo, stilato alla fine del 1951, diventa operativo agli inizi del 1952 con le prime Minerva che, destinate all’esercito belga, escono dagli stabilimenti di Anversa. I numeri ipotizzati sono, per quei tempi, decisamente consistenti poiché il programma prevede la produzione, in cinque anni, di circa 10.000 Minerva 80 T.T. (la sigla starebbe ad indicare Tout Terrain). L’accordo tra le due case prevede che Minerva realizzi in proprio (sulla base della dima originale Land) sia il telaio che la carrozzeria, che però non è in alluminio, come quella originale, ma realizzata in lastre d’acciaio saldate. 

Da parte sua Rover fornisce un kit completo per tutto ciò che riguarda motore, meccanica, trasmissione, cambio e quant’altro. Il propulsore è l’originale 2.0 litri (1.997 cc) da 52 cv e circa 136 Nm di coppia. Si tratta di un benzina 4 cilindri in linea, con albero a gomiti su tre supporti), valvole comandate da aste e bilancieri, con quelle di scarico “laterali”. L’alimentazione è con un carburatore Solex invertito. 

La trasmissione si avvale di un 4×4 inseribile, che viene attivata premendo la leva (con pomello giallo), sistemata a lato del tunnel. Il passaggio dai rapporti normali a quelli ridotti e viceversa è, invece, comandato (a veicolo fermo) dall’altra leva (con pomello rosso).  

L’accordo Rover/Minerva prosegue sino al 1956 e mentre la casa inglese introduce la “86 pollici” (che Minerva produrrà in pochi esemplari destinati quasi tutti ad usi civili) una serie di incomprensioni tra le aziende pone fine all’accordo.

Delle circa 8.000 Minerva 80” costruite, molte furono poi demolite,  dopo  essere state alienate dall’esercito e dai vari corpi militarizzati e ne rimangono circa un centinaio ancora circolanti.

PANORAMICA/CONDIZIONI
La Minerva in asta è un esemplare utilizzato dall’esercito belga, come testimonia il simbolo sul parafango anteriore.

La vettura è stata poi acquistata e meticolosamente restaurata dalla Land Rover Team, società indipendente specializzata nel restauro e manutenzione delle Land e Range Rover, che l’ha utilizzata per esposizioni e raduni.
