Volvo - PV544 - NO RESERVE - 1958
One of the first PV544! After 67 years still in a good condition, no welling needed! Dutch registration. Imported from Sweden to Holland in 2011. Restored between 2011 and 2013; chassis in epoxy primer. Electricity changed to 12 volt. Motor changed to B18; engine in a good condition. In 2014 safety belts were installed in the front and in the back. Inside roof is on some spots broken and should be renewed. Momentary colour: mat black. In 2015 we brought the car to our summer cottage in Finland. Since then the car was only used during several months in summertime. The wish washer is at this moment not working properly and should be looked after. Some boxes with reserve-/spare parts are included. The Volvo PV544 is located in Finland near Oulu.
Additional information:
Bottom of the car:
There are no photos of the bottom of the car. In 2024, 2 grease nipples were replaced. The bottom looks good and shows at most some surface rust. A few years ago the muffler was renewed. Among the spare parts are 2 new mud flaps that still need to be mounted. It is possible that when the Volvo is relubricated, it may turn out that a few grease nipples still need to be replaced. Grease gun and lubricating grease are among the included parts.
Bodywork:
The bodywork has no dents and no rust. No welling is needed. It is a self-supporting chassis. It is a 2-door sedan. The front chrome bumper has been disassembled but is still present in the spare parts in 3 parts. The bumper supports are also still present. The rear bumper is painted matt black. A towing eye is mounted at the front. The rubber of the trunk lid is present but still needs to be mounted. During the restoration in 2012/2013, crossbeams on the underbody were completely renewed. Both doors close well but could be adjusted slightly in terms of suspension. A few grommets to the engine compartment still need to be mounted. Several anti-rust treatments were applied. In 1958, the year of introduction of this Volvo PV544, a larger convex windscreen was also installed together with a larger rear window to improve visibility. There is a non-disturbing bump in the glass of this windscreen.
Paint:
During the restoration in 2012/2013, the entire body was sprayed in black epoxy primer and the bottom plate in red. In Finland, the entire body was sprayed matt black with the spray can and then provided with a matt clear coat. On the roof, the latter is done a little too generously. As a result of the large temperature differences, small cracks in the paint are sometimes visible, especially in places where putty was used in the past. In recent years, these have always been restored in the summer months.
Engine:
During the restoration in 2012/2013, the original B16 engine was replaced by a B18 engine, originating from a vessel. This engine is in good condition and starts up again fairly quickly after the long winter break. The engine runs very smoothly. It is a 4-cylinder in-line engine with overhead valves. During the restoration the electrics were also converted from 6 to 12 volts and an extra fuse box was built into the trunk. There is a single carburettor. Every summer this engine is cleaned with engine cleaner. The upper part of the radiator is made of copper. For winter storage, it is flushed every year and provided with new antifreeze.
Brakes:
The Volvo is equipped with hydraulic drum brakes on all wheels that work well in themselves. After the long winter break, he sometimes pulls a little to the right. After a few kilometres and heavy braking attempts, this is usually over. The brake lines were renewed during the restoration and show no defects. The handbrake works properly. However, the braking power is not contemporary. An upgrade to a system with front disc brakes, a brake booster and brake force distributor (front/rear) has been thought about but not yet applied.
Gearbox:
4-speed manual gearbox. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears function well. Sometimes some trouble with 1st gear. The reverse also works properly. The gear lever is mounted on the floor and has a homemade button. The intention was to renew the gearbox oil this summer.
Interior:
The front seats and rear seats are clean and in reasonable to good condition. There are cracks in the inside ceiling in a number of places, which need to be replaced. The dashboard has a padded upper part that is slightly raised on both sides. The cardboard tray is missing from the glove compartment. The instrument panel is functional except for the choke button, which is missing. The spare parts do have an alternative choke button. The seals at the side windows are in less good condition and will need to be replaced in due course. The transition to the engine compartment has been soundproofed with a rubber finish over it. This is also installed on the floor in the interior and in the trunk.
Service:
The last bigger service took place in 2015 before the Volvo was transported to Finland. Since then the motor oil was changed every 3 years, the gearbox oil was changed only ones, the sparkplugs were changed twice, the air filter was changed ones and cleaned ones. The radiator is flushed every year and provided with new antifreeze. In summertime the Volvo PV544 was driven less then 500km during our 3 month stay. Due to the fact that this classic Volvo is standing on a yearly base more than 8 months in the garage proper service is advised.
