AR Penck is a painter, printmaker, sculptor, born in 1939 in Dresden and passed away in 2017 in Zurich. He tried to join the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1956 but was rejected, mainly due to his communist beliefs. In 1968, Ralf Winkler gave himself the name AR Penck, a pseudonym inspired by the geologist Albrecht Penck. He identifies with the rebellious character of Rembrandt, who, like him, was an outsider. AR Penck took risks working according to his Marxist ideals in the GDR. His works are censored and he will be stripped of his nationality. His work recalls that of the great moderns: Picasso, Kirchner, Klee, Giacometti, but retains a wilder, rawer aspect, approaching graffiti. His universe is nourished by colorful characters, symbols, violently assembled. He composes his language to "represent beings in action." He dubbed this painting style: Standart. As soon as he left West Germany in 1980, rejection gave way to success; he won the Rembrandt Award in Basel in 1981 and the Aix-la-Chapelle Art Prize in 1985. He will be the subject of a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and at the Maeght Foundation.
