The Kuba are renowned for the refinement of prestige objects created for members of the high ranks of their society. The Kuba created a variety of lidded objects in which personal goods were stored and adorned them with patterns which are reminiscent of their textiles and masks.

The reddish residue inside probably comes from the traditional cosmetic paste used by Kuba men and women.
