HISTORIE/DOCUMENTATIE:

De Mercedes-Benz 220 S Ponton is in feite wat tegenwoordig de S-klasse is: Het vlaggenschip van Mercedes-Benz. Destijds een zeer innovatieve en luxueuze auto met opties zoals een radiospeler, waarover ook dit exemplaar beschikt. Dit exemplaar is op 18 juli 1956 nieuw geleverd aan de firma IMA (Importateur des Moteurs et d'Automobiles) in Brussel, België. Dit blijkt uit het Mercedes-Benz Classic certificaat dat bij de auto aanwezig is. In 1994 is de auto geïmporteerd naar Nederland, waar hij altijd in bezit is geweest van één en dezelfde liefhebbende eigenaar. Inmiddels dus al 31 jaar. In de jaren "90 is de auto gedeeltelijk onder handen genomen door Mercedes-Benz specialist Jaap Havik. De 220 S bevindt zich in een tamelijk originele staat. Verder zijn bij de auto het kentekenbewijs uit 1994, een instructieboek, een magazine en een kleurenkaart aanwezig. 

EXTERIEUR:

De auto is uitgevoerd in zwart lakwerk, dat fraai contrasteert met het vele chroomwerk en hem een statige uitstraling geeft. Het is geen auto in concoursstaat. Het lak- en chroomwerk verkeert in een tamelijk originele staat, waardoor normale gebruikerssporen te zien zijn. De passingen zijn niet perfect en de auto heeft rondom plekjes die je zo kunt laten of zou moeten bijwerken. De naam 'Ponton' verwijst naar de afwezigheid van uitstekende spatborden, wat destijds een modern ontwerp was en is afgeleid van het Franse woord voor drijflichaam. Aan de voorzijde pronken de originele Bosch mistlampen.

INTERIEUR:

Het prachtige interieur beschikt over luxe banken met grijze stoffen bekleding. Vanuit de bestuurdersstoel wordt uitzicht geboden over het imposante, grote stuurwiel en het houten dashboard. In dit dashboard zijn onder meer een horizontale snelheidsmeter, een klok en de originele radiospeler verwerkt. Daarnaast beschikt het interieur over verwarming. De kofferruimte is netjes en biedt plaats aan het reservewiel. Hier is het genieten van al het comfort dat deze auto te bieden heeft. 

TECHNISCH:

Technisch is de auto goed onderhouden, waardoor dit een goed rijdend exemplaar is. De rembekrachtiging is vernieuwd, evenals de 4 banden. Onder de motorkap ligt de begeerde 2.195 cc 6-cilinder lijnmotor, die voor het nodige extra vermogen zorgt ten opzichte van de veel produceerde 4-cilinder modellen. De auto beschikt verder over een handgeschakelde 4-versnellingsbak en (uiteraard) achterwielaandrijving. De betrouwbare motor levert 99 pk en geeft de auto een topsnelheid van 160 km/u. Een genot om mee te rijden!
