HISTORIE:

De Mercedes-Benz 300 "Dora" (W189) is een bijzondere en zeldzame auto die vaak werd gebruikt als parade-auto voor staatshoofden. Het was destijds het topmodel van Mercedes-Benz die met de hand werd gebouwd en die voorzien is van een lange wielbasis en een krachtige zescilinder motor met brandstofinjectie, bekend uit de legendarische 300 SL. Dit exemplaar beschikt over het originele typeplaatje en de originele motor. Ongeveer 25 jaar geleden is begonnen met met de restauratie van de auto, maar deze is stil komen te liggen en dient nog te worden afgemaakt. De auto is geschouwd en gelabeld door de RDW, waardoor de auto na voltooiing van de restauratie op kenteken geregistreerd kan worden in Nederland. Dan kan ook een export document geregeld worden voor buitenlandse kopers. 

EXTERIEUR:

De auto heeft indrukwekkende afmetingen met een lengte van meer dan 5 meter. Kenmerkend zijn de ramen die, inclusief frame, wegzakken in de portieren en de uitneembare achterste zijruiten, wat zorgt voor een cabriolet-achtig effect. De auto is al sinds 1978 binnen gestald (grotendeels in Nederland) en is hierdoor roestvrij gebleven. Ca. 25 jaar geleden is het plaatwerk in orde gemaakt en is de carrosserie opnieuw gespoten, maar het spuitwerk dient opnieuw gedaan te worden vanwege blaasjes in de lak. De stijlvolle zwarte kleur is origineel (kleurcode DB40). Er zijn veel extra onderdelen aanwezig, zoals een (kapotte) voorruit en een achterruit, die nog wel in prima staat verkeert. Het chroomwerk is (grotendeels) aanwezig maar kan verder geperfectioneerd worden. 

INTERIEUR:

Ook het interieur dient verder gerestaureerd te worden. Het houtwerk is reeds aangepakt. Momenteel is het interieur voorzien van witte lederen banken, maar een stijlvol en begeerde 'Pullman' set is aanwezig, uitgevoerd in donkergroen velours. Het indrukwekkende houten dashboard beschikt onder meer over een klokje en de originele Becker (Brescia) radiospeler. Voor de bestuurder pronkt het witte, grote stuurwiel en een grote, ronde snelheidsmeter. Door de ruimte zowel voorin als achterin is het genieten van voor die tijd uitzonderlijke luxe en comfort. 

TECHNISCH:

Omdat de Dora al lang stilstaat, moet deze technisch volledig worden nagekeken en gerestaureerd worden. De motor is origineel geleverd bij dit exemplaar en dit betreft de 2.996 cc 6-cilinder lijnmotor met brandstofinjectie, die ook in de beroemde 300 SL ligt. De Dora deelt meer technische innovaties met de 300 SL, zoals de onafhankelijke wielophanging rondom, wat zorgt voor een verbazingwekkende lichtvoetige en rustige wegligging. Mercedes gebruikte destijds dan ook de slogan "Licht en elegant te berijden". De remmen betreffen door vacuüm ondersteunde hydraulische trommelremmen. De onderzijde van de auto ziet er hard uit, zonder sporen van roest.

ALGEMEEN:

De Mercedes-Benz 300 Dora W 189 wordt vaak verward met de 300 Adenauer W 186, die in het begin van de jaren "50 werd geproduceerd. De Dora is echter zeldzamer, krachtiger, groter en technisch aanzienlijk geavanceerder. Een Europees geleverd exemplaar is dan ook steeds zeldzamer, met name een handgeschakeld exemplaar. De W 189 300 Dora werd in 1987 geïntroduceerd als opvolger van de W 186, en moest de concurrentie aangaan met andere luxe limousines in het topsegment zoals de Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. De W 189 werd opgevolgd door de 600 Pullman Limousine, die later werd opgevolgd door de modellen van Maybach.
