Description from the seller
Jan van Eyk was a Dutch artist, born in Helmond in 1927. He started as a draftsman and developed from abstract work to more figurative painting. His themes ranged from religious motifs to human relationships such as mother and child.
Van Eyk often worked in series and employed various techniques, including oil paint, charcoal, and ink. His style combined expressionism, abstraction, and figuration. He was active in North Brabant, and his work is included in collections such as Museum Helmond and the Van Abbemuseum. He is regarded as an important representative of post-war art in South Netherlands.
This painting depicts two figures at a table, rendered in a still, introspective atmosphere. The contours are vague and soft, placing the depiction between figuration and abstraction. The left figure — presumably a woman — is cloaked in a light tone, while the right figure, shrouded in darkness, almost dissolves into the shadow.
The background consists of a rich palette of greens, browns, and ocher tones, applied in broad, layered brushstrokes. These color fields suggest an interior but remain deliberately undefined, drawing full attention to the emotional charge of the figures.
The work is a bit dirty.
This artwork comes from the collection of the Eindhoven Museum. As part of the transition to Museumpark Vonk, selected works are being disposed of so that the museum can fully focus on the history and identity of Eindhoven.
Dimensions with list: 73 x 73 cm
Dimensions without frame: 70 x 70 cm
Viewing is naturally possible. Additionally, we have our own in-house frame workshop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary. Furthermore, we make use of restorers from the industry organization: 'Restauratoren Nederland'. If you wish to make use of this, we would of course be happy to hear about it.
