Avatāra (devanāgarī अवतार; also Avatara; sometimes in the Anglo-Saxon rendition Avatar) is a masculine noun of the Sanskrit language that indicates, in numerous hindū theologies, the appearance or descent to Earth of the divinity with the purpose of restoring or protecting the Dharma.

This term is related to the verb avatṝ (parasamaipadam, active, 1st class), meaning "to descend into" (accusative or locative) or "to descend from" (ablative) or also "to reach" (accusative) or "to be at the right place", "to suit" and finally "to be incarnated" (in the case of a deity).

The religious notion of avatāra, that is “the descent to Earth of the deity" appears in India between the 3rd and 2nd century BC, in the Bhagavadgītā when Vishnu, here understood as the Bhagavat, God, the Supreme person, expresses the intention to take various forms in order to restore the cosmic order (Rta/Dharma).
