Rare Egyptian bronze seated Baboon. It has a compact, upright posture with the hands resting on the knees. The figure is fixed on a modern museum display stand.
Size: ± 51,3 x 24 mm (Baboon)
Height display: ± 40,2 mm
Condition: excellent condition with dark olive-green to brown patina and signs of wear consistent with an ancient artefact.

-> This is a rare depiction in bronze of Toth represented as a sitting baboon.
The baboon was linked to the sun and the moon; the Egyptians thought that the animals had foreknowledge of the sun’s arrival, which they heralded with screams and paw-waving, and similarly must have had knowledge about the moon. Thoth was one of the gods associated with the moon, and thus there was also a relation between this god and the baboon, which became one of his sacred animals; sometimes the god himself assumed the shape of a baboon.
