Oude Egypte, late periode Faience Wedjat Amulet (Zonder minimumprijs)

An Ancient Egyptian faience wedjat amulet, more commonly known as the Eye of Horus. The amulet displays the typical silhouette, combining human and falcon ocular features. The details of the eye have been intricately incised: the brow is portrayed through hatched, diagonal lines, beneath which are the almond-shaped eye with a large, round pupil, and the extended cosmetic line. The rectangular cheek marking is adorned with two grooves and a final incision leads from the base of the eye to a spiral at the back. The reverse mirrors the design. A rectangular protrusion features at the top of the amulet that has been pierced for suspension. Minor signs of ageing such as earthly encrustations and scratching. Original colour and glaze of the faience has faded. Horus was one of the most significant Ancient Egyptian deities, most commonly depicted with the head of a falcon, and the body of a man. He was a sun and moon deity, with his right eye thought to represent the sun and the left the moon. The eye of Horus, also known as ‘Wedjat’, was an ancient symbol of protection, particularly for the afterlife, and was also used to deflect evil. For this reason, it was often worn or hung on the deceased at burial. This symbol was highly influential in Egyptian life, with ancient sailors painting the image on the bow of their vessels to ward off evil. Measurements: L 2.3cm x W 1.8cm Provenance: Early 20th Century UK Collection
