Een exclusieve links gestuurde Marcos 1800 GT. Een auto die iedereen bijzonder vind en altijd de aandacht trekt, maar weinig mensen kennen de auto. Het is de eerste serie van dit type en zijn al jaren zeer gezocht door verzamelaars over de hele wereld. Dat komt doordat dit de enige Marcos is die in aanmerking komt voor historische races. 

Er zijn er van de 1800 GT slechts 33 met de onafhankelijke De Dion achteras gebouwd. De sportwagen was onder andere voorzien van een mooi maar gecompliceerd dashboard, een bewezen betrouwbare Volvo B18 motor, een sterke Volvo M41 versnellingsbak en de befaamde De Dion achteras (allen nog altijd matching!). 

Dit resulteerde in een zeer hoge verkoopprijs bij de dealer en de auto vond dan ook maar zelden een gelukkige eerste eigenaar. Om de verkoopprijs te verlagen zijn later de modellen vereenvoudigd met een kleinere Ford motor, een ander type versnellingsbak en werd het dashboard veel simpeler. Ook kwam er een starre achteras in plaats van het dure De Dion differentieel. Gelukkig is dit dus een van de 33 exemplaren uit de gewenste eerste serie met het schitterende dashboard. 

Er zijn naar verluid slechts 2 links gestuurde 1800 GT's op de wereld!

Eerst nog even een korte historie van Marcos. Het merk was opgericht door Jem Marsh die zeer ervaren was met circuit en raceauto's en Frank Costin, de Britse auto ingenieur die zijn aerodynamische kennis van vliegtuigbouw gebruikte voor de ontwikkeling van zijn eigen sportauto. 

De Marcos was geboren en de naam werd ontleend uit de eerste 3 letters van beide achternamen. Het complexe monocoque chassis bestond uit 386 delen die werden gelijmd.. Zo ontstond er een licht maar ultra stijf en licht chassis. De motor en achteras werden in een stalen subframe gemonteerd. Dat was eigenlijk dus een beetje afgekeken van de Jaguar E-type. De carrosserie was geheel van onderhoudsvrij polyester. De gelaagde voorruit was van glas en alle overige ruiten waren van lexaan, alles om het gewicht van de auto zo laag mogelijk te houden.

De Marcos is op 1 juni 1965 afgeleverd aan de eerste trotse eigenaar en in 1978 naar een liefhebber in de USA getransporteerd. De Marcos heeft in 2003 zijn weg terug gevonden naar Europa en werd geïmporteerd in Nederland. Daarna is er begonnen met een zeer gedetailleerde restauratie van enige jaren. 

Werkelijk alles is vernieuwd of tot nieuwstaat hersteld door de specialist in Engelse sportwagens Nico Baas. Van alle werkzaamheden zijn de originele restauratienota's aanwezig in en dik dossier en alleen de totale restauratie heeft aantoonbaar al ruim €68000,- gekost. Gelet op het zeldzaam mooie resultaat is het een verantwoorde investering geweest. Het lakwerk is uitgevoerd in het befaamde British Racing Green en is echt schitterend. Nauwelijks zichtbare gebruikssporen en dat geld ook voor het interieur.

Nu 20 jaar later is de auto nog steeds zeer mooi. Duidelijk dat een degelijke en dure restauratie na jaren nog steeds zijn resultaat laat zien. Wat is de auto laag..... net iets meer dan een meter hoog. Instappen en uitstappen is een enorme uitdaging, maar als je eenmaal in de auto ligt (want zitten kan je het niet noemen) is het verbazingwekkend dat zelfs lange personen tot ruim 1.90m goed hun plek weten te vinden. 

De bedieningspendalen staan in vergelijking met de vroegere Lotussen veel breder gepositioneerd. De stoelen staan trouwens vast want Marcos koos er voor om juist de pendalen te kunnen verstellen. Het mooie echt lederen dashboard is schitterend en voorzien van vele chroom omrande meters en schakelaars en het kleine houten Mono-Lita stuur geeft de juiste klassieke uitstraling uit de jaren 60.

De originele matching Volvo motor is voorzien van zijn 2 Stromberg CD 175 carburateurs met kelken en start direct. De motor loopt mooi en krachtig en is in 2016 volledig gereviseerd, waarvan ook hiervan de rekening van ruim €10.000,- aanwezig is. Ook hier alles weer in uitstekende conditie evenals de versnellingsbak en het De Dion cardan.

De ultra lage gestroomlijnde carrosserie is nog steeds erg mooi. Na 20 jaar zijn er nauwelijks imperfecties te vinden. De 4 koplampen zijn omhuld door transparante kappen ten behoeve voor de betere aerodynamica. De auto heeft een dubbel RVS uitlaatsysteem en voorzien van MInator lichtmetalen velgen met centrale moer. 

Er is een zeer duidelijk inzichtelijk dossier bij de auto. Compleet met originele fabrieksbrochures, import documenten, APK formulieren uit het verleden en alle restauratienota's ter waarde van €68000,-. Ook zijn er taxatierapporten uit 1996, 2003, 2004, 2009 en 2017. Daaruit is op te maken dat de waarde van de auto oplopend is en er is tussen 1996 en heden 2023 maar 2421 mijl met de auto is gereden. Wel heeft de auto altijd tussendoor netjes zijn onderhoud en APK keuringen gehad.  Nu is door de leeftijd de auto APK vrijgesteld. Er zijn 2 sleutelsets met originele Marcos sleutelhangers aanwezig.

Het rijden brengt je helemaal terug naar de hoogtijdagen van de vroegere autosport. De Marcos stuurt als een kart. Nog extremer dan de vroegere Lotus Europa bijvoorbeeld. Alles is anders en schakelaars zitten op een plaats waar je ze niet verwacht. Het woord ergonomie bestond nog niet in 1965. 

Echt ouderwets rijplezier dus en je hoeft bij een Marcos niet bang te zijn dat je een tweede tegenkomt tijdens een rit, dat in tegenstelling van de hedendaagse Lamborghini's en Ferrari's. Zeer zeldzaam.
