De Mercedes-Benz R129, geïntroduceerd in 1989, bleek een keerpunt voor zowel het merk als de auto-industrie. Als opvolger van de opmerkelijke R107-serie werd de R129 ontworpen om nieuwe maatstaven te stellen op het gebied van technologie, prestaties en comfort. Met krachtige functies zoals een elektrisch bedienbare stoffen kap, een volledig onafhankelijke wielophanging en ingebouwde elektronische stabiliteitscontrole, zette de R129 een nieuwe standaard voor luxe roadsters.

De 500SL, met een krachtige 5,0-liter V8-motor, was het paradepaardje van de R129-serie. Dankzij zijn verfijnde prestaties, comfortabel rit en tijdloos ontwerp, bewezen de 500SL snel de harten van autoliefhebbers wereldwijd. Tegenwoordig wordt de R129-serie nog steeds beschouwd als een van de meest iconische en populaire Mercedes-Benz modellen ooit.
