Osaka“ is a collection of photographs by Japanese photographer Shigekazu Kawamura, who was a close friend of Moriyama, as his photographs appeared in the last issue (No. 5) of ”Record," a private edition published by Daido Moriyama from 1972 to 1973. This book, published in 1978 as a private edition, is set in Osaka and consists of photographs snapped in the city, incorporating Osaka Castle, a kuidaore doll, Glico's neon lights, Tsutenkaku Tower, and other Osaka landmarks. At the end of the book, Moriyama writes in a text titled “On the Way” that “I watched him go crazy about Osaka for more than four years,” which suggests that the photographs were taken over a period of four years. The dynamic composition of this work, similar to Moriyama's, is impressive, with close-up shots of neon lights, advertisements, and other street decorations, as well as people's faces. It may seem unrestrained, but its fearlessness is appealing. This book, a collection of fragments of reality, is unmistakably supported by the sentiments of Shigekazu Kawamura, but it refuses to be deciphered by leaning on his sentiments" (Daido Moriyama).
