Joel Meyerowitz lives in New York, where he was born in 1938. After studying painting and illustration, he became the art director of an advertising agency, but his encounter with the images of Robert Frank led him to photography. Along with Lee Friedlander and Garry Winograd, Meyerowitz initially became a leading figure in the Street School, intent on recording the unexpected and unpredictable events of the metropolis. Reflection on the work of Eugène Atget led him to a radical transformation, and with a 20 x 25 Deadorff camera, he devoted himself to a contemplative vision, producing color views of natural and urban landscapes. This resulted in his most important volumes, such as CapeLight, St. Louis and Arch, and Redheads, an anthology of female portraits.
Meyerowitz has received a two-time Guggenheim Fellowship and several grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Humanities. Meyerowitz's contribution to the representation of contemporary urban space and to the use of color as a symbolic form and as a founding element of photographic meaning is decisive.
