Automobiel historie ten top!

Sir Stirling Moss en Carel Godin de Beaufort waren de Formule 1 rijders die uitgenodigd waren op het circuit Zandvoort om de presentatie te aanschouwen van deze eenmalig gebouwde nieuwe Nederlandse sportwagen. Carel Godin de Beaufort reed met de hier aangeboden auto zelfs een demonstratie op het befaamde circuit in Nederland. Nu niet meer voor te stellen dat Lewis Hamilton en Max Verstappen zich belangloos daar voor laten gebruiken, maar op 17 november 1958 was dat allemaal nog mogelijk. Er waren ook veel persfotografen, prominenten en een televisieploeg van de NTS uitgenodigd en aanwezig op het circuit. Helaas is het bij dit ene exemplaar gebleven en is de serieproductie nooit gestart, maar daarover later meer.

Het initiatief lag bij de heer Puck van Beekum. Een Nederlandse autohandelaar die de import zou vertegenwoordigen voor de Benelux van een Zwitserse dwergauto de Bellcar. Dit bedrijf ging vroegtijdig failliet en dhr. van Beekum bleef met een grote schuld achter van dit avontuur. Om dat weg te werken kwam hij met het idee om zelf een sportauto te gaan ontwikkelen. 

De Citeria wordt ontworpen. Er werden geldschieters gezocht en een goede ontwerper en constructeur. Han van der Blij had veel ervaring met door hem gebouwde formule auto's en wist wel hoe je een degelijke auto moest bouwen met toen al rondom onafhankelijke wielophanging voor een goede wegligging. 

Er werd een naadloos getrokken buizenframe geconstrueerd door van der Blij. BMW werd benaderd om de motor te leveren en steunde dit project. De mal van de carrosserie werd gemaakt door de firma Stapel en de polyester body werd gebouwd door de Oldenzaalse firma Plasticon. De grill en omlijsting van de voorruit werden geproduceerd door Gietwerk Industrie Faassen gemaakt uit aluminium wat later gepolijst werd. Het uiteindelijke resultaat was geïnspireerd op de toenmalige grote Italiaanse meesterwerken. inclusief de eind jaren 50 populaire vleugeltjes op de achterspatborden en voorzien van suïcide deuren. 

Ondertussen werd er een fabriekshal van 8000 m2 gehuurd voor de productie aan de Koppelstokstraat in Scheveningen en een showroom aan de Westduinweg. Na ongeveer 2 jaar bouw- en testwerk was de auto klaar en werd het  circuit Zandvoort afgehuurd voor de mondiale onthulling. 

Het Citeria team wist de media goed te bereiken en de kranten en weekbladen hadden al veel over deze Citeria geschreven, dus de verwachtingen waren hoog gespannen.  Aansluitend werd er een feest georganiseerd in Hotel Bauwes in Zandvoort. Kosten speelden geen rol leek het wel..... of toch wel?

Hoogmoed komt voor de val wordt vaak gezegd en helaas ging dat ook op voor deze sportauto.

Enkele dagen na de onthulling werd dhr. van Beekum gearresteerd wegens financieel wanbeleid en moest na veroordeling twee en half jaar de cel in. Alle bezittingen werden in beslag genomen waarvan het enige waardevolle deze net afgebouwde Citeria was. Na het faillissement is de auto via de curator bij het bedrijf Westdorp terecht gekomen op de Brasserskade in Delft.

Daar is de auto aangekocht door ene heer W. Zonneveld die na keuring en registratie bij de rijksdienstwegverkeer de auto als privé vervoermiddel gebruikte vanaf 26 juni 1961. Na enige jaren gebruik is de auto weggezet in zijn garage en is daar 30 jaar blijven staan totdat dhr. Zonneveld met pensioen ging. 

Ondertussen werd er in de media regelmatig gespeculeerd waar deze Citeria toch gebleven was. Dhr. Zonneveld was erg introvert en maakte er geen ruchtbaarheid aan. Hij dacht alleen maar: voor jullie een vraag en voor mij een weet. 

De auto is in zijn pensioen tot in de puntjes gerestaureerd, maar de enige Citeria op aarde bleef daarna bij Zonneveld in de garage staan om er uitsluitend zelf van te genieten. 

In mei 2006 is na 45 jaar als eerste eigenaar werd de auto toch verkocht wegens ouderdom van de dhr. Zonneveld aan een garagebedrijf in Friesland. Ook de overdracht van de auto moest in het geheim gebeuren. De heer Zonneveld wilde niet dat de auto op klaarlichte dag naar zijn nieuwe eigenaar verhuisde en zodoende werd de auto midden in de nacht opgehaald en naar de nieuwe eigenaar gereden. Geheel in de mysterieuze stijl die zich al jaren om deze auto heen gevormd had. 

Vanaf toen kwam de auto wel meer in de publiciteit. Er werden door de jaren heen diverse reportages gemaakt en hij stond een keer op een klassiekerbeurs. Ook dit garagebedrijf is lang in het bezit gebleven van de Citeria maar na 16 jaar werd er toch afscheid van genomen.

De ontwerper/technicus van deze Citeria Han van der Blij heeft totaal wel 40 formule auto's geproduceerd. Zijn doel was om ooit een Formule 1 team te beginnen maar zover is het nooit gekomen. Er hebben wel veel bekende coureurs in zijn auto's gereden op het circuit. Onder andere Porsche importeur Ben Pon, Gijs van Lennep, Toine Hezemans, Ben Huisman, Sir John Whitemore en natuurlijk F1 coureur Carel Godin de Beaufort. Ook stonden er drie formule auto's door hem ontworpen prominent aanwezig op het defilé van Koningin Juliana op paleis Soestdijk op 30 april 1965. Echt een vakman dus met een goede reputatie in de raceauto wereld.

Dan de beschrijving van de huidige staat van de Citeria:

Die is in de eerste helft van de jaren 90 geheel professioneel gerestaureerd volgens de hoogste normen. De auto is later weer geheel rijklaar gemaakt om er ook van te kunnen genieten op de openbare weg. Voor een auto uit eind jaren 50 rijdt hij bijzonder degelijk en goed. De techniek van BMW 4-takt heeft zijn karakter niet verloren. In het bijgeleverde laatste taxatierapport is de Citeria getaxeerd op een huidige waarde van €65000,-. De polyester carrosserie heeft nooit schade gehad en het interieur is op hoogstaand niveau afgewerkt met lederen bekleding .De afneembare hardtop is van metaal en past uitstekend. Ook heeft de auto nog steeds het originele zelfde kenteken uit 1961. De auto is zeer mooi en degelijk afgewerkt met minimale gebruikerssporen.

Er is enorm veel documentatie over en bij deze eenmalig gebouwde auto. Zowel uit 1958 als latere reportages. Over de oude eigenaren, veel historische foto's inclusief toenmalig Formule 1 rijder Stirling Moss bij de onthulling en Carel Godin die een demo geeft op Zandvoort (zie de 2 laatste foto's) , heel veel reportages uit de kranten en de toenmalige televisiereportage met bewegende beelden van de Citeria op het circuit in 1958.  Er is zelfs een 1/43 model leverbaar van deze Citeria en wordt bij de aankoop meegeleverd.

In september 2024 is de auto winnaar geworden op het prestigieuze  Concours d' Elegance in zijn klasse Nederlands cultureel erfgoed. De jury waardeerde hem op zeldzaamheid, originaliteit en het aantoonbare bijzondere verleden! Op uitnodiging heeft de Citeria deelgenomen in juni 2025 aan de historische Grand Prix en reed na 67 jaar voor het eerst weer op hetzelfde befaamde circuit op Zandvoort waar Carel Godin de Beaufort in deze auto in 1958 reed! 

Als u een klassieker zoekt met een geweldige en interessante historie is dit een passend exemplaar. De initiatiefnemers waren nog echte helden, ongeacht hoe het achteraf gelopen is. En het is achteraf het enige exemplaar wereldwijd gebleven! Door zijn leeftijd van 67 jaar behoefd de auto in Nederland geen A.P.K. meer te hebben en is ook vrij van wegenbelasting.
