Description from the seller

Protective ancestor figure Yaka, DRC (Bandundu)

The Yaka are a Bantu people of Central Africa, mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, close to the Suku and Teke.

They are known for their ritual art and powerful objects, particularly the Yaka fetishes (also called nkisi or minkisi).

Yaka figurines often have a distinctive aesthetic:

Oversized heads with protruding jaws.

Intense or grimacing expressions.

Dynamic postures.

Yaka fetishes are mainly used for protection and healing. They contain a 'magical charge' called bilongo, made of powders, resin, shells, and animal or plant elements.

They are activated by rituals conducted by an nganga (healer/diviner), who uses them to heal, protect against evil spirits, or resolve conflicts.

Here is a very beautiful example of Yaka statuary, very well mounted (9x8.5cm).
