Figure d'ancêtre protecteur Yaka, RDC (Bandundu)

Les Yaka sont un peuple bantou d’Afrique centrale, principalement en République Démocratique du Congo, proches des Suku et des Teke.

Ils sont connus pour leur art rituel et leurs objets puissants, en particulier les fétiches Yaka (appelés aussi nkisi ou minkisi).

Les statuettes Yaka ont souvent une esthétique marquée :

Têtes surdimensionnées avec mâchoire avancée,

Expressions intenses ou grimaçantes,

Postures dynamiques.


Les fétiches Yaka servent surtout à la protection et à la guérison. Ils contiennent une « charge magique » appelée bilongo, faite de poudres, de résine, de coquilles, d’éléments animaux ou végétaux.

Ils sont activés par des rituels conduits par un nganga (guérisseur/devin), qui s’en sert pour soigner, protéger contre les mauvais esprits ou régler des conflits.
