A 45 x 45 cm earthenware platter from Plateelbakkerij Delft (P.B.D.), Hilversum, dating to 1906, with a Rembrandt-based sepia reproduction, marked with an early PBD triangle mark, L, II and D, and bearing model numbers 1557 and 20 with OE and M stamps, in good used condition with minor glaze and surface flaws.
Description from the seller
Very beautiful and rare sepia dish from Plateelbakkerij Delft (P.B.D.), made in 1906 in Hilversum.
The dish measures 45 x 4 cm and is a reproduction of the painting 'Tronie van een man met gevederde baret' by Rembrandt van Rijn (https://www.mauritshuis.nl/ontdek-collectie/kunstwerken/149-tronie-van-een-man-met-gevederde-baret), often wrongly called a self-portrait. The dish is very beautifully painted.
On the back, clearly marked with an early PBD triangle mark with below it an 'L' (the painter's initial), an 'II' (the month sign, February), and a 'D' (the year letter, 1906). Above are the numbers 1557 (a model or decoration number), and the number 20 is underlined. In the ceramic, the letters 'OE' and 'M' are stamped.
The plate has various small damages, see the detailed photos. The rim shows some wear at 7 o'clock on the lower left and a small glaze defect at 3 o'clock. Additionally, there are a few visible scratches and spots where the glaze is missing (two in the hair, one near the ear, and one in the right pupil). These appear to have been retouched to make them less noticeable; they could also be original baking flaws.
Despite these minor damages, the dish still looks very beautiful, especially in the evening when displayed on the wall. A valuable addition for every collector of Delftware.
The dish is shipped very well protected in a spacious package. We ship worldwide.
