Magnifique animal mythique en terre cuite du Mali.
En Afrique, les sites archéologiques de la région de Djenné ont livré un grand nombre de sculptures en terre cuite représentant des animaux et des reptiles. Celles-ci vont de petits serpents enroulés de quelques centimètres de diamètre à d’imposantes figures animales aux dimensions et au poids remarquables. La fonction exacte de ces œuvres zoomorphes demeure incertaine, mais plusieurs hypothèses suggèrent qu’elles incarnaient des êtres semi-divins vénérés dans des sanctuaires spécifiques.
Si cette interprétation est correcte, ces découvertes constitueraient un témoignage de la persistance des croyances animistes préislamiques parmi les populations locales. Cette terre cuite africaine figure un étrange quadrupède qui pourrait représenter un animal chimérique, mais aussi un cheval, un âne, un bélier ou encore une brebis.
