Publisher’s dark-blue pictorial cloth with gilt lettering to upper board and spine, top edges blue, silver-decorated endpapers, colour frontispiece with tissue guard, around 100 line drawings (including full-page and smaller illustrations), numerous decorative initials (printed in red), xiv / 312 pages, 20.8 x 14.2 cm.

This is one of Willy Pogany’s earliest titles, preceding the major works that established his reputation between 1909 and 1913. The book includes a beautiful colour frontispiece, plus around 100 drawings in Art Nouveau style, whose wonderfully inventive designs reflect Pogany’s mastery of the black-and-white medium, in which he excelled.

Greer, in his Pogany bibliography, notes that ‘The Welsh Fairy Book’ was the most attractive of Fisher Unwin’s fairy books, with “excellent Art Nouveau illustrations greatly enhanced by the red decorated initials”. 

The contents include over 40 Welsh folk tales, fairy tales and legends, together with a preface plus a small section on Welsh pronunciation.

Condition:
Usual age-toning to paper. Smudging, finger-marking and light creasing throughout, intermittent staining, some foxing, numerous short closed tears to gutters, two longer tears, a few nicks/short tears elsewhere, several pairs of gatherings stretched, a little creasing/bumping to edges and corners, one corner crease, usual creasing/foxing to tissue guard. Endpapers with usual browning to edges, slightest chipping to corners; front free endpaper with gift inscription (partly abraded away), plus short closed tear to lower gutter; paper split along rear hinge, halfway along front hinge. Edges of page block with foxing and scratching; foot with shelf-soiling; top with fading plus a few small marks. Binding a little loose, with lean. Boards and spine with scratching, creasing, discoloration and marks as shown, usual rubbing, bumping and wear to extremities; cloth worn through slightly to corners; head and foot of spine with tears.
