Looking for one of the most memorable and exciting hot hatches of the 1980s? An lightweight French hot hatch that that's increasingly rare and surging in value: The Renault 5 GT Turbo.

This was the genesis of the modern Renault hot hatch. The 5 GT Turbo was launched in 1985, bringing some excitement to the otherwise functional and workmanlike second-generation Renault 5 range. The net result was 120hp and 165 nm. Autocar called it ‘very fine indeed’ whilst Car said it was an ‘exhilarating drive’ and went on to include it in their Top Ten of the Year in 1987 and 1988. 

The really interesting thing about the 5, however, is the way it handles, in particular the way the front end just dives into corners and then feels quite unnaturally nailed to the road.

The car you can see here is one of the few near-standard examples left in Portugal. Is why it’s a rare delight to find a GT Turbo as original as this. This is a very original example, in very good condition. 

The car was bought new in Portugal and always kept in the country. It is known that it had only 3 owners - not documented - and that it has been in private collections of two enthusiasts of the brand for over 15 years.

Although it doesn't have a maintenance book, the car has only been used a few hundred kms in the last 15 years having always done the regular maintenance in specialists.
