Bertone - Freeclimber Powered by BMW 2.7 - 1992

1992 Bertone Freeclimber BMW in original condition.

Bertone began production of the Freeclimbler in 1989 to make its first foray into the SUV segment. It was based on the Daihatsu Rocky, with the addition of new mechanicals from BMW with diesel and petrol engines (engine and 5-speed manual gearbox). On the aesthetic side, the front end was reworked with a new grille and double headlights (inherited from the Lancia Delta). The Italian coachbuilders added a variety of colours with two-tone schemes and O. Z wheels designed for the model.

Inside, the modifications begin with a complete overhaul of the front and rear seats and two-tone leather panels. The steering wheel was also replaced with leather upholstery. Air conditioning, electric windows and a central console with Veglia Borletti clock, voltmeter and inclinometer were added.

This unit belongs to the first series (1989-1992) and is fitted with a 2.7 petrol 6-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox (BMW M30 B27). It was released in Valladolid (Spain) in 1992 and had a second owner in 2004 until 2021.

Currently the car is in Madrid, where it has had the last maintenance, filters, fluids, brake pads and brake shoes and lights. They were done in September 2021 and since then it has covered about 9,000 km, the last work done has been 4 new Maxxis Bravo A/T tyres (2,000 km of use). There is a video of the vehicle in operation available for those interested.

A second hand painted "summer" tailgate is included in addition to the original (see photos). This second tailgate was made because the original one is not divisible and the glass was exposed (it was obtained from a Daihatsu and cut out), unlike the series 2, which was based on the Daihatsu Feroza and did have a system to divide it.

It has approximately 149,500 km, with MOT valid until June 2023. The engine runs well, but in 2016 it was overhauled with 130,000 km, including valves and rocker arms (see invoice). The gearbox works correctly, although the clutch pump should be replaced, as it occasionally scrapes when shifting into gear if the pedal has not been pressed firmly.

The brake system should be checked and a general overhaul carried out. The suspension also needs to be overhauled. The steering is power-assisted and very precise. The injection sometimes smells a high petrol/air mixture. Power windows are very slow and sometimes fail. The air conditioning has not been tested.

On the exterior, we have a two-tone grey/blue paintwork which retains all of its original badges. The paintwork has a gloss, although some areas such as the bonnet and roof have sun-baked lacquer. There are scuffs on the bumpers and right front wing. There is a crack in the grille which could be repaired. The driver's door handle is not original.

The interior still has its original upholstery, which is difficult to preserve, but there is a lot of wear on the driver's seat. In the rear we see that the seat is cracked on the boot side (see photos). The system that folds down the passenger side seat does not work properly at times and releases itself. There is no radio, although there are some speakers installed in the rear (not tested).

The car is delivered in Madrid with the roof and tailgate fitted.

"It is advisable to view the car in Madrid before bidding to avoid disappointment. For an appointment to see the vehicle, please contact Catawiki.
