Description from the seller
Antique Pewter Charger Plate – Engraved “ALT BENKER” 1710 – Broad-Rimmed Cardinal’s Hat Form
In excellent condition – No reserve
A beautiful and authentic antique pewter charger plate in the classic broad-rimmed “cardinal’s hat” form, a highly collectible model associated with early 18th-century European tableware. This type of plate is distinguished by its wide flat wing and recessed central well, giving it a strong sculptural presence.
The upper rim is finely engraved with the inscription “ALT BENKER”, flanking a stylized bull’s head motif, together with the date 1710. Such engravings were often used as owner’s marks, family marks, or workshop identifiers, and the bull’s head is a traditional heraldic symbol frequently found in early Continental pewter.
Crafted in solid pewter with a rich, naturally aged patina developed over centuries, this piece has excellent decorative appeal and strong historical character. It works beautifully as a wall display, cabinet piece, or as part of a serious pewter collection.
The broad-rimmed charger style is especially sought after by collectors of early Continental European metalwork and reflects the craftsmanship and domestic culture of the period.
Approximate dimensions: 1.5 x 28 x 28 cm (height × width × depth)
Approximate weight: 1220 g
Condition: In excellent antique condition with honest age-related surface wear and natural patina consistent with centuries of use. No dents, cracks, or repairs. A fine original collector’s piece with strong presence and authenticity.
A rare and decorative early pewter charger with engraved provenance and true period character.
