Description from the seller
Charred blackened wood crucifix and Christ in silver – Symbolism of the Defeated Serpent – 19th century
Table crucifix in turned blackened wood, resting on a molded baluster base, surmounted by a spherical knot adorned with a serpent coiled in relief.
The cross, sober and cylindrical, receives a figure of the crucified Christ in silver, finely modeled. The titulus INRI is also in applied silver.
The Christ presents expressive anatomy, with nerve-like modeling, with pronounced treatment of the musculature and the perizonium tied at the hip.
Work of good quality, presumably cast then chased and refined on the surface.
The remarkable iconographic element is the presence of a serpent coiled around the central globe, placed beneath the Cross.
This representation explicitly refers to the theology of Christ triumphant over sin and Satan.
The serpent, symbol of evil, is here dominated by the vertical axis of the Cross, affirming the redemptive victory.
Beautiful old patina on the blackened wood, normal signs of wear. The silver shows a slight patina, with no visible structural alterations.
The photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement its presentation. They allow appreciating its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The object will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure quick and secure delivery.
